Information About

Batou

Batou (バトー ''Batō'') is a main male character in the '' Ghost In The Shell '' series, the second best melee fighter in Section 9 and is the second in command under Major Motoko Kusanagi .

''GHOST IN THE SHELL''

The Batou of Mamoru Oshii's films is very different from the one in the two series', . In the Ghost In The Shell film and its sequel, Batou is more serious and straight-faced. In the manga and anime TV series, however, he is more of a joker, being serious when he has to be. In addition the manga color panels show Batou having a brown crew-cut, while in the first movie Batou has blonde crew-cut with a short ponytail. In the second movie along with the anime series, however, he has blonde hair slicked back into a long ponytail. In the original film, sequel and both anime seasons, Batou's dubbed voice is provided by voice actor Richard Epcar .

''Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence''

The portrayal of Batou in centers around his reaction to the disappearance of Major Motoko Kusanagi at the end of the first GitS movie. What is most notable about Batou's emotion in ''Innocence'' is his lack thereof; for the most part he expresses nothing whatsoever. In fact, the commentary on the ''Innocence'' DVD touches on the fact that it is Batou's lone companion, a Bassett Hound , that express almost all of the emotion in the entire movie. Ishikawa , who is actually Batou's senior, berates him for keeping such a high-maintenence dog since he is a single man in a dangerous line of work. It is left up to the viewer to decide exactly what feelings Batou's has or had for the Major, but it is generally accepted that the movie is largely, in part, a love story.

''STAND ALONE COMPLEX''

However, in the two '''' series, Batou's personality is more like that in the Manga version. He is an outgoing joker, but one with a quick temper. Being emotional and not as calm as the Major, Batou shows anger at injustice and cruelty. In the series, he shows impatience with Togusa , to the point of rudeness.

Batou had served in a military Special Forces team before entering Section 9. Most of his body is comprised of Cybernetic Prosthetic s. Despite the fact that Exercise will do his cybernetic body parts no benefits, Batou lifts weights as a hobby. Based on several of the Stand Alone Complex episodes, Batou seems to have been in the American Imperial Army at some point before he joined Section 9, serving as a member of the Rangers . His unit was involved in World War III and was deployed to South America , where they accidentally stumbled across an American Imperial Navy unit conducting a covert operation codenamed Project Sunset (war crimes units dropped behind enemy lines to ruthlessly massacre civilians, spreading terror and chaos in the ranks). Batou's eyes are grey and clearly artificial, and are standard cybernetic equipment used only with Ranger Special Forces teams.

In '''' Batou is the favorite of the Tachikoma s, because he shows care and affection to them and allows his "personal" Tachikoma to have Organic Oil , which leads to problems. Later in the series the Tachikoma 's AI starts to develop rapidly, which is attributed to a mutation in a protein chip caused by Batou's natural oil.

It appears that Batou was the second one the Major recruited to Section 9 followed by Saito. Batou also had the same hair cut that he had in the first Ghost in the Shell movie.
