Barrhaven is a Suburb an area located in the southwest corner of the city of Ottawa , Ontario , Canada , about 20 km (12 miles) southwest of downtown Ottawa. Prior to amalgamation with the city of Ottawa, Barrhaven was located within the city of Nepean . Barrhaven is approximately bounded to the north by the Greenbelt , to the east by the Rideau River , to the west by Highway 416 , and to the south by the south shores of the Jock River . (Several developments have taken place in that area as well, which are often considered part of Barrhaven.) However it is growing quickly, particularly in the southern and eastern parts of the area, and much of the surrounding farmland is being overtaken by the Urban Sprawl . Much of this expansion can be attributed to a rapid influx of High-tech companies into the area during the 1990s (such as JDS Uniphase and Nortel ), and the growth of the Public Service in the National Capital Region. Since Barrhaven has been built so quickly and so recently, like most North America n suburbs, it has a very uniform feel considering how big it is. Almost every street consists of fairly large late 20th Century style suburban houses, with Big-box Store s and Strip Mall s tucked in here and there. In the older parts the streets wind and turn, never forming a grid as they do in older parts of Ottawa. This presumably makes for a quiet, calm suburb, but is unfortunate for Barrhaven's local city buses. These go in a general loop, turning on seemingly random local streets on their way to and from the nearby Fallowfield Station , the current end of the line for the Nepean South leg of the Transitway . It's rumoured by some Ottawans that Barrhaven may be named for Mel Barr, a Kingston developer who offered to build a Horse Racing facility in the area that is now Barrhaven. He was unaware that the nearby Rideau Carleton Raceway had already been built so he offered to build a subdivision instead, which was called Barrhaven, from the term "Barr's haven". Since Barrhaven was never a Municipality or Census Division , there are no official population figures; it is estimated that the 2005 population of the area is about 57,000. Barrhaven is sometimes affectionately known as "Baby Haven", "Far Haven", "Barren Haven", "Barf Haven", "Bore Haven", "The Haven" and "Barbeque Haven". It's also home of the Walter Baker Sports Centre, also known as, "Wally World" from National Lampoon's Vacation movie. POPULATION HISTORY Flooded with Catholic and Public School s, Barrhaven also has an extremely nice landscape, featuring many public Park s and Playground s that have been built within the last few years. This growing community now boasts wider access routes and its own Movie Theatre . |
