Information About

Barelvi

Barelwi is historically the term for the residents of Bareilly , a small city in the North Indian State of Uttar Pradesh . In modern usage, it usually refers to the followers of Imam Ahmed Rida Khan Barelwi, an important Muslim scholar of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Barelwis are Sunni Muslims.

The actual followers of Imam Ahmad Rida Khan — while regarding themselves as Sunnis — indicate this particular attachment with words like Rizwi (or Razavi), Barakati, or Nuri — all of which refer to subdivisions of the Qadiri Sufi lineage.
The Barelwi followers are mostly seen among Muslim populations of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The Berailvi Muslims are considered to be the moderators in their ideas. They believe in peace, love and tolerance.

A madrassah was established under the administration of Imam Ahmed Rida Khan (1856-1921).

CRITICISM

Some Islamic groups have accused the Barelwis of indulging in Shirk . Many accuse them of contravening the Shari'ah and intermingling their beliefs with Hindu customs and practices. Since the madrassa's establishment, the Deobandis have been the Barelwis most vocal opponents. Imam Ahmed Rida Khan and the Deoband imams anathemized one another, citing errors in each other's works.
