The Royal Burgh of Banff and the Burgh of '''Macduff''' are twin burghs now in Aberdeenshire , Scotland , although prior to 1975 Banff was the County Town of Banffshire , and this is sometimes still to be found in postal addresses. Banff lies on the west bank, and Macduff on the east bank of the mouth of the River Deveron around 20 miles west of Fraserburgh . The towns have an Aquarium , Beach es, and are home to the Colleonard Sculpture Park . Also in the burghs is Duff House , designed by William Adam in 1730 , and now part of the National Gallery Of Scotland . A couple of miles from Banff is the beautiful village of Gardenstown - a big favourite with the tourists. The name 'Banff' is derived from the Scottish Gaelic ''Banbh'' or ''Banbha'', which was one of the old poetic names for Ireland . Currently, the languages spoken in the town and in its vicinity tend to be the Doric Dialect of Scots , or English Banff achieved a brief fame or notoriety at one point in the 1970s , when during a performance there, the Glaswegian Comedian Billy Connolly was booed off the stage for being too vulgar. '' Macduff '' is also the name of a character in Shakespeare's play '' Macbeth ''. Banff and Macduff don't quite merge. They are separated by the valley of the River Deveron. This unpredictable river was only finally tamed by the seven arched bridge completed in 1799 by John Smeaton , whose other claims to fame included the Eddystone Lighthouse. An earlier bridge had been built here in 1765, but it was swept away in 1768. The old ferry was brought back into use, until it was lost in a flood in 1773. Though no longer a commercial port, the harbour still serves leisure traffic and the area is well worth a look for a sense of what Banff must have been like before the coming of its more upmarket upper town. Banff's Tourist Information Centre opens during the summer and can be found by the car park you pass en route to Banff Bridge and Macduff. One of their walkman tours provides an excellent way to gain an insight into the town, its history and its architecture. Banff, and surrounding areas, local football team is Deveronvale F.C. . |
