Information About

Balga, Western Australia

The name "Balga" was adopted in 1954 and is derived from an Aboriginal word for the indigenous Grass Tree Xanthorrhoea, commonly known as the '''Black Boy'''.

It was considered by many to be a 'slum' or 'ghetto', probably due to the high crime rates and the high amount of public housing in the area. With the introduction of the New North Project in 1998 the suburbs reputation has improved and property values increased. In 1994 , the southern half of Balga was used to name a new suburb called Westminster .
