Bairnsdale is a city in eastern Victoria , Australia , population 11,000 ( 2001 ). It is situated 285 kilometres - approximately 3 hours drive - east of Melbourne , near where the Mitchell River empties into Lake King, and is close to the beautiful Gippsland Lakes and the Ocean . Bairnsdale is the commercial centre for the east Gippsland region and the seat of local government for East Gippsland Shire . It has two high schools, Nagle College (Catholic Private) and Bairnsdale Secondary College (Government).
