Bachelors Of Medicine And Surgery

NAMING

The Latin versions of these degrees are variously ''Medicinae Baccleureus, Chirugiae Baccleureus'' or ''Baccalaureus in Medicina et in Chirurgia'', abbreviated to MB ChB or MB BChir, the English version is ''Bachelor of Medicine'', ''Bachelor of Surgery'', abbreviated as BM BS. However, the different Latin and English abbreviations may occasionally be combined by certain institutions such that BM BCh and MB BS are also seen.

United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland

The abbreviation used differs at different UK and Irish universities.
  • ''MB ChB'' is used at the universities of Aberdeen, Birmingham, Bristol, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Keele, Manchester, Sheffield, and Warwick.

  • ''MB BS'' is used at the University of East Anglia, Hull York Medical School , the University of London, and University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

  • ''MB BCh'' is used at Cardiff University and the University of Wales.

  • ''BM BCh'' is used at Oxford.

  • ''BM BS'' is used at University of Nottingham, Peninsula Medical School and Brighton Sussex Medical School

  • ''BM'' is awarded at the University of Southampton. Although no degree in surgery is formally awarded by Southampton, this degree is equivalent to the MB ChB, and students may go on to a career in surgery the same as any other graduates in medicine and surgery.

  • ''MB BChir'' is awarded by the University of Cambridge.

  • ''MB BCh BAO'' is awarded by Queen's University Belfast, University of Dublin and the National University of Ireland (University College Dublin, University College Cork and National University of Ireland, Galway). BAO is '''Baccalaureus in Arte Obstetricia''', ''Batchelor of Obstetrics '', a degree shared by all university medical schools in Ireland .

  • ''LRCPI LRCSI'' indicates a holder of the historical Licenciate s awarded by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, which permitted the holder to practice medicine in Ireland. Students at RCSI, which still awards these licenciates, now also receive the degree ''MB BCh BAO'', due to RCSI's status as a recognised college of the National University Of Ireland . The licenciates from the royal colleges in Great Britain are no longer registerable with the General Medical Council since 1999.

  • The University of St Andrews formerly awarded ''MB ChB'', but now only awards a pre-clinical ''BSc'' or ''BSc(Hons)'', and students subsequently obtain the degrees of ''MB ChB'' from the University of Manchester.

In the modern system in Britain and Ireland MD refers to a Higher Doctorate , and is reserved for medical practitioners who do research in the field of Medicine .

Australia

Most Australian Medical Schools style their medical conjoint degree, Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, as MB BS.

Some Australian medical schools offer MB BS to graduates (such as The University of Queensland and the University of Sydney), which can take around four years.

The University Of Newcastle offers the 5 year undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine (BMed) degree, which is the same qualification level as the MB BS. It was named as such to represent the program's innovative quality, demonstrating that in modern practice Surgery is no longer entirely its own field, but instead comes under the broad title of Medicine (along with Psychiatry , Obstetrics , etc). Newcastle graduates are no less qualified and many have gone on to be surgeons themselves. 1

New Zealand

The two New Zealand Medical Schools, Auckland and Otago , style their degrees as MB ChB. The New Zealand MB ChB degrees take 5-6 years depending upon graduate or undergraduate entry.

United States and Canada

In the United States , the MD is the equivalent of the British BM BS degree as the initial medical qualification obtained from university. The American MD, being a professional degree not earned substantially through research, is not considered a genuine academic doctorate in the United Kingdom and other countries such as Australia.
