A Bachelor of Music degree is a Bachelor's Degree awarded by a college, university, or conservatory upon the completion of a three or four-year program of studies in music. In the United States, the B.M. is a professional degree; the majority of work consists of prescribed music courses and study in applied music. In the University Of Oxford the degree of Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.) is a postgraduate degree by examination (the undergraduate degree is in the Faculty of Arts). In the University Of Cambridge the degree of Bachelor of Music (Mus.B.) can be taken by final-year undergraduates (i.e. those who have completed the first part of the Music Tripos) in place of their B.A., or as a postgraduate degree either residentially or externally. For New York University, the degree of Bachelor of Music (B.Mus) is standard for undergraduates in the Steinhardt School of Education studying Music Business, Music Technology, Music Education, Music Performance, Music Technology, Music Theory and Composition or Vocal Performance. At Ithaca College in New York, the Bachelor of Music (B.M.) is a standard undergraduate degree that is completed in either 4 or 4 1/2 years. Concentrations that can be undertaken in four years include Vocal Performance, Instrumental Performance, Jazz Studies, Music Education, Composition, Music Theory/ History, and Bachelor of Music with an Outside Field (though some students elect to complete the BM/OF degree in 4 1/2 or 5 years due to the sheer volume and breath of courses required.) The double concentration Performance and Music Education, usually takes a minimum of 4 1/2 years, however students entering the college with Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate credit, or who participate in summer sessions can feasably do it in 4 years. Additionally there is also a Bachelor Of Arts degree in Music, which allows for a much larger Liberal Arts base in courses than the BM degree does. |
