is a
Text Editor originally developed for
Macintosh System Software 6 and now for
Mac OS X . It is made by
Bare Bones Software . BBEdit is not a
Word Processor , meaning it does not have text formatting or page layout features. BBEdit's audience includes
Programmer s and
Web Designer s. Bare Bones Software also made a free and less-featured version of BBEdit called
BBEdit Lite . They discontinued BBEdit Lite at version 6.1 and replaced it with
TextWrangler , which initially cost money (though significantly less than BBEdit), then several years later was released for free.
BBEdit supports
Syntax Highlighting for a wide variety of popular computer languages. It also contains powerful multi-file text searching capabilities including strong support for
Perl -compatible
Regular Expression s. BBEdit allows the easy previewing and debugging of
HTML and Perl and provides built-in prototypes for most HTML constructs. It also includes
FTP and
SFTP tools and integrates with
Code Management Systems . BBEdit readily shows differences between file versions and allows for the merging of changes.
BBEdit is among the more notable text editors available for the Macintosh platform. Its use is ubiquitous among web designers, and many applications and
Integrated Development Environment s (
IDEs ) provide direct support for using BBEdit as a
Third-party source code editor.
- BBEdit's tagline, a registered trademark, is "It doesn't suck."
- The first version of the application was said to have been created as a " Proof Of Concept " for a "bare bones" text editor to replace the text editor included with Macs at the time, TeachText , which couldn't read files larger than 32K. There's nothing "bare bones" about it today, as BBEdit is now a full-featured, mature application with many advanced features.
