Information About

Austrian Champions (football)

Overview

From 1911 until 1923 the championship was organized by the FA of Niederösterreich ( Lower Austria , the province of which Vienna was the capital), and contained only teams from Vienna.

It was then taken over by a newly formed FA of Vienna (WFV, ''Wiener Fussball-Verband''), which organized the first professional league on the European continent in 1924/25.

After the Anschluss in 1938 the German authorities organized a championship of the "Gauliga Ostmark" (Regional League ''Ostmark'', which was the name of Austria as German province), in which for the first time some clubs from outside Vienna were included (Sturm Graz had failed to gain promotion in the playoffs 1937).

After WW II, the championship was initially restricted to clubs from Vienna until 1948/49, when clubs from the rest of Austria gained admission for the first time.

In 1965 LASK (the ''Linzer Athletik und Sport Klub'' from Linz ) became the first non-capital team to claim the championship. It has since been followed by the varying incarnations of Wacker Innsbruck, VÖEST Linz (VÖEST stands for "United Austrian Iron and Steel Works") , SV Salzburg and Sturm Graz.

NAME CHANGES

  • Austria Wien was known as '''Amateure''' until the mid-twenties.

  • Admira Wien and '''Wacker Wien''' merged ca. 1970 and long played as '''Admira/Wacker''' in the Südstadt Stadium (Maria Enzersdorf). A merger with '''VfB Mödling''' in 1997, saw them renamed '''VfB Admira/Wacker Mödling'''.

  • Wacker Innsbruck changed names very often, and also merged with '''WSG Wattens''' for a few seasons. Their current name is '''FC Tirol Innsbruck'''.

A further note to names: Many Austrian clubs frequently acquire the names of their sponsors. Eg., SV Salzburg is currently known as Red Bull Salzburg, and was amongst others previously known as Casino, Wüstenrot, etc.
