The Auckland War Memorial Museum is one of New Zealand 's most important national Museum s and War Memorial s. Although the museum itself dates from at least the 1860s , the present heritage building in the Auckland Domain was opened in 1929 , and was extended in the 1960s , and again in 2004 . The museum houses the largest collection of Māori and Pacific Island Artefacts and Treasure s in New Zealand, and also serves as a memorial to the Aucklanders who lost their lives in the First and Second World War s.
