Information About

Arrernte

Arrernte is a Language , a group of people, and also an area of land in Central Australia .

LANGUAGE

The Arrernte languages are a group of closely related languages spoken in and around Alice Springs in the Northern Territory of Australia. This group includes the following:

Other closely related languages are:

The group consisting of these last three together with Arrernte has no traditional name, and is often referred to as the Arandic group.

Phonology

Eastern Arrernte will be used to illustrate Arrernte phonology. Labialization has shifted from the historical Rounded Vowel to adjacent consonants, resulting in a doubling of the consonantal inventory along with a reduction in the number of vowels to just two, and . This situation is found throughout the Arandic languages. A similar historical change resulted in the small number of vowels and large number of labialized consonants in the Northwest Caucasian Languages .

The two missing labialized consonants in the inventory, and , may be accidental gaps rather than constraints in the system.

PEOPLE

The Arrernte people are a group of people that traditionally live in the Arrernte lands. Some Arrernte people live in other areas a distance from their homeland, and may even live in Sydney or Melbourne or overseas.

The groups of people are:
  • Central Arrernte refers to people from the township of Alice Springs only.

  • Eastern Arrernte refers to people from the Arrernte lands East of Alice Springs.

  • Western Arrernte refers to people from the Arrernte lands West of Alice Springs.

  • Arrernte refers to all groups combined, or alternatively to the people from the few Arrernte lands North of Alice Springs.

AREA OF LAND

The Arrernte land is controlled by Arrernte Council which in turn is controlled by Central Land Council from Alice Springs . Arrernte is the traditional language of Alice Springs , which is the centre of Arrernte land.

Arrernte land claims run as far west as Mutitjulu and King's Canyon , and as far east as the western edge of the Simpson Desert . Arrernte does control a small amount of land north of Alice Springs, but there are no communities on this land.

ARRERNTE LANGUAGE IN SCHOOLS

In most primary schools in Alice Springs, students (of all races and nationalities) are taught Arrernte (or in some cases Western Arrernte) as a compulsory language, often alongside French or Indonesian languages. Additionally, most Alice Springs High Schools give the option to study Arrernte language throughout High School as a separate subject, and it can also be learned at Centralian College as part of a TAFE course. Future plans are that it will be included as a university subject.

ARRERNTE LANGUAGE IN WORKPLACES

Many Alice Springs workplaces require for employees to learn at least basic Arrernte in order to communicate effectively with the large numbers of Arrernte people (approximately 25% of Alice Springs residents speak Arrernte as their first language). Many workplaces offer learning of Arrernte as an option and will fund the course.

TOURISM

Throughout Alice Springs, tourists can learn about the Arrernte way of life, with guides and storytellers speaking of the life in a variety of different ways. Tours are run regularly to Hermannsburg ( Western Arrernte ) and Wallace Rock Hole ( Eastern Arrernte ) so as to learn more about the Arrernte way of life, from their artwork to their culture and language.
