HISTORY

The area was first settled by the Scottish Archibald McNab who named the area after his family's ancestral home of Arnprior, Scotland . After becoming renowned for the despotic way he treated those on his land he was forced to vacate the area in 1840 and the area was vacant until 1851 when it became incorporated into eastern Ontario's massive Timber industry. Arnprior was incorporated as a Village in 1862 . Thirty years later (in 1892 ), it was incorporated as a Town . It occupies a beautiful spot at the confluence of the Madawaska and Ottawa rivers.

TRANSPORTATION


Arnprior is located on the Trans-Canada Highway system, where Highway 417 to the east becomes the two-lane Highway 17 to the west. The town is served by the Arnprior/South Renfrew Municipal Airport and a nearby floatplane base for General Aviation ; scheduled commercial flights leave from the Ottawa/Macdonald-Cartier International Airport , 56 kilometers to the east.

The town is located on the Ottawa River , but is cut off from the lower Ottawa River and the St. Lawrence Seaway by rapids.
