Under Public Law No. 98-497, one of the most important duties that the Archivist has is to maintain custody of State Legislative ratifications of amendments to the United States Constitution and to proclaim a particular amendment duly ratified and part of the Constitution in the event that the legislatures of at least three-quarters of the states approve said amendment.
