Antanas Venclova ( in Trempiniai – June 28 1971 in Vilnius ) was a Lithuania n Poet , Journalist and Translator . He studied Lithuanian, Russian and French at the Kaunas University ; he worked as a teacher and editor before being briefly appointed as Minister of Education of the Lithuanian SSR following the Soviet takeover in 1940 . He lived in Russia during the Nazi occupation, returning in 1944. In the following years, he faithfully served the Soviet government. His son, Tomas Venclova , was however a prominent dissident. |
