Anshan





Anshan (; lit. 'saddle mountain') is a city in China in Liaoning Province close to Shenyang . It has a population of approximately 3.6 million.


LOCATION

Anshan is located in the center of Liaoning Province which is one of the open cities on Liaodong Peninsula . Anshan covers an area of about 9,252 square kilometers. The longest distance from the north of Anshan to south is 175 kilometers and distance from west to east is 133 kilometers. Anshan City is 89 kilometers away from Shenyang City which is the capital of Liaoning Province.


HISTORY

Anshan was belonged to Liaodong shire in Qin Dynasty (221B.C.-207B.C.). In Han Dynasty (206B.C.-220). Anshan became a formal administrative region controlled by the Northeastern People's Government(renamed as the Northeastern Administration Commission in November 1952)in 1949, the year then the People's Republic Of China was found. On 12th March 1953, Anshan became a municipality directly under the Central Government. Haicheng County and Xiuyan County were subordinated to Liaodong Province. Taian County was subordinated to Liaoxi Province. August 22,1954, the Central Government decided that Anshan was administered by Liaoning Province. The State Council confirmed that Anshan is in charge of liaoyang City and Haicheng city in 1985.


ECONOMY

Anshan is famous for its Iron and Steel complex, which is the largest in China.

It was called "The Capital of Steel" in China.


DEMOGRAPHICS

Among the 3.584 million people in Anshan, Haicheng, the sub-city of Anshan has 1.1811 million people; the town of Anshan, Tai'an has 354.7 thousand people; Another town Xiuyan has 491.9 thousand people. Han Chinese form the largest Nationality in Anshan with 3.0205 million people, with the remainder composed of 38 other nationalities, the largest being Manchu , Hui , Miao and Zhuang .


TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

Anshan is home to the Anshan Jade Buddha , the largest Buddha Statue made of Jade in the world.

The mountain range Qian Shan (literally, "thousands of mountains") is a major tourist draw. Known as the "Pearl of the Northeast," it was titled as one of the most famous tourist spots of China in 1992.


FIVE-YEAR PLAN

The government of Anshan established a Five-year Plan in 2000 with the aim of turning the city into a strong modern industrial city with plenty of tourism. It also aimed to make the city GDP reach 100 billion by 2005 and to build a modern industrial city by using advances in technology to transform the traditional industries. Attracting foreign investment is also another main idea in the plan. The Anshan government anticipates the foreign investment assets would be around 80 billion by 2005.


MISCELLANEOUS

Anshan was the birthplace of Ann Hui (born 1947 ), a Hong Kong -based Film Director , one of the most critically acclaimed amongst the Hong Kong New Wave .


CLIMATE

Anshan has four Seasons . General speaking, the weather is dry and sunshine is abundant.

  • --- Spring (March to May) with a lot of windy days; less rainy days than summer; long time sunshine and low humidity.

  • --- Summer (June to August) with heavy and frequent rain; high temperature around +30°C.

  • --- Autumn (September to October) with clear sky and cool air; temperature drops abruptly; wind from north gets heavier.

  • --- Winter (November to mid-term of March next year) with snow and ice. The average temperature is around -20°C. Temperature turns back as time passes.



FIVE-STAR HOTEL

International Grand Hotel is one of two five-star hotels in Northeastern China, built by the Anshan Municipal Government. The construction of the hotel started in 1992 and opened for trial on August 28, 1994. The formal open date is May 1, 1995.
The International Grand Hotel is situated in Dongshan Scenic Reserve where you can have a panoramic view of both the city and the mountains. Not far from the hotel you can find the king size Jade Buddha Statue. The hotel covers 25,000 m with 30 restaurants.
