Anna was a nun, but during the unsuccessful reign of Irene Palaeologina she had been persuaded by Trapezuntine nobles to abandon her monastic vows, and seize the crown. Wherever she went, the people joined the revolt and when Anna arrived at the Trebizond walls in July 1341 she was admitted without resistance and acclaimed Empress, while Irene was deposed. Three weeks later to Trebizond sailed three Byzantine ships and the troops under the leader of the Scholarii, Nicetas . With them came Empress' uncle Michael who was the husband chosen for the now deposed Irene by her half-brother John V Palaeologus . Anna was deposed and Michael was accepted as the legitimate ruler of Trebizond. However, for Trapezuntine nobles Michael was a foreigner and furthermore they feared he would marry deposed Irene. On his coronation day he was seized, deposed and sent off in exile to Oinaion and Anna was restored as Empress. Actually, she was only a puppet in the hands of the ruling nobility. Nicetas, the leader of the Scholarioi returned to Constantinople and convinced Michael's son, John to return to Trebizond and assume the throne. In September 1342 , with the help of the Genoans John's small forces seized Trebizond. Anna was strangled, and almost all of her nobles were murdered. |
