Ann Cavoukian




Born in Egypt to Armenia n parents, Cavoukian immigrated to Toronto with her family in 1958. She is the sister of the well-known Canadian children's entertainer Raffi .

Cavoukian received an MA and Ph.D in Psychology from the University Of Toronto , specializing in Criminology and law. She joined the Ontario provincial Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner in 1987, and served as its first Director of Compliance.

Initially appointed in 1997, Cavoukian is the first IPC of Ontario to be re-appointed for a second term (until 2009).


ON ADOPTION DISCLOSURE


On March 29 , 2005 , she spoke out against the Adoption Disclosure Bill 183 advanced by Minister Sandra Pupatello in a news release entitled "Making adoption bill retroactive will break promises and invade privacy of thousands of Ontarians".

Since then, Cavoukian has had to retract some of her earlier statements in her "Alert for Birth Parents" in which she admitted that, contrary to her previous statements, many birthmothers already do not have the confidentiality that they may have been promised previously.
