America Georgine Ferrera (Born April 18 , 1984 in Los Angeles, California ) is an American Actress . She was born to Immigrant Honduran parents and was raised by her mother in San Fernando Valley . She started acting at age eight at the local theater and in school plays. In 2002 she made her film debut in '' Real Women Have Curves ''. She won best actress at the Sundance Festival that year for her role. She has continued to land roles in both television (such as '' Touched By An Angel '') and film ('' The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants '', '' Lords Of Dogtown ''). In 2006 she landed the lead role in " Ugly Betty ", an upcoming Dramedy pilot for ABC . The show is an adaptation of the Colombian hit telenovela " Betty La Fea ".
