João Baptista da Silva Leitão de Almeida Garrett, 1st Viscount Almeida Garrett ( Pron. IPA //) (b. February 4 , 1799 in Porto - December 9 , 1854 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese Romanticist and a writer. His parents were António Bernardo da Silva Garrett and Ana Augusta de Almeida Leitão. In ). In the Azores, he was taught by his uncle, Dom Alexandre Da Sagrada Família , Bishop of Angra. In 1818 , he moved to Coimbra to study at the University Of Coimbra . In 1818 , he published "''O Retrato de Vénus''". He also adopted his pen name: Almeida Garrett. He participated in the Portuguese Liberal Revolution in 1820 and was exiled to England in 1823 , after the Vilafrancada . He married Luísa Midosi when she was only 14 years old. He continued with the romanticist movement. He went to France where he wrote "''Camões''" in 1825 and "''Dona Branca''" in 1826 . In 1826 , he returned to Portugal where he settled for two years until the return of Dom Miguel , King Of Portugal , who returned Portugal to Absolutism in 1828 . He left for England for the second time where he published "''Adozina''" and "''Catão''"" in during the same year. Almeida Garrett, together with Alexandre Herculano and Joaquim António De Aguiar took part in the Landing Of Mindelo in the mid of the Liberal Wars . When the Constitutional Monarchy was established he dedicated exclusively to his literary activities, ending his relationship with Luisa Midosi in 1835 . He married Adelaide Pastor in 1841 , whom would be his wife until his death. He published his masterpiece "''Frei Luís de Sousa''" in 1843 and in 1851 received the title Visconde De Almeida Garrett . He died of Cancer in 1854 . The library in Porto which is named Almeida Garrett National Library (''Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garret'') is named in his honor. EXTERNAL LINKS
