Born and raised in Ipswich, Queensland , Langer grew up playing football alongside future Brisbane Broncos (and Australia) team mates Kevin and Kerrod Walters . He was selected as an Australian schoolboy representative in 1982. Coached by former champion Australian half-back Tom Raudonikis, Langer became a key player for the Ipswich Jets when he was only 17 and was playing first grade for the club by 1986 . He made his Rugby League State Of Origin debut in 1987 , and his superb performance saw him signed on with the newly-established Brisbane Broncos. The diminutive Langer played most of his career with the Broncos, becoming captain in 1992 . During a poor start to the 1999 season, Langer announced his retirement from rugby league. Surprising no one, he soon came out of retirement to play for the British club the Warrington Wolves . In 2001 , Queensland (and Broncos) coach Wayne Bennett made a surprise selection of Langer - still playing in England - for the Queensland side in the third State of Origin match of that year. Langer returned and produced a display of football showing that he was still capable of playing at his best in the Australian competition, generally regarded as superior to the English one. Langer was lured back to the Broncos for one final season, where despite his vintage form the team was unable to win the Premiership. |
