The Aldine area is nearby Houston 's George Bush Intercontinental Airport , which is the second largest aviation facility in Texas .


HISTORY

Aldine was originally built on the International–Great Northern Railroad and named for a local farm family. The community had a post office from 1896 until 1935, when mail was delivered from Houston. By 1914 Aldine had two general stores, a fig preserver, and several poultry breeders and dairymen. The population briefly reached 100 in 1925 but fell in the 1930s and 1940s to between thirty and forty. The Aldine schools were integrated by federal order in 1965. The community began growing again in the late 1970s. It had a population of 12,623 in 1986 and 11,133 in 1990.


GEOGRAPHY

Aldine is located at 29°55'9" North, 95°22'47" West (29.919136, -95.379834) .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the area has a total area of 21.0 Km&2 (8.1 Mi&2 ). 21.0 km&2 (8.1 mi&2) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census of 2000, there were 13,979 people, 4,007 households, and 3,193 families residing in the CDP. The Population Density was 667.2/km&2 (1,727.0/mi&2). There were 4,403 housing units at an average density of 210.1/km&2 (543.9/mi&2). The racial makeup of the area was 59.30% White , 5.84% African American , 0.69% Native American , 3.41% Asian , 0.07% Pacific Islander , 27.58% from Other Races , and 3.10% from two or more races. 56.33% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 4,007 households out of which 45.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.9% were Married Couples living together, 12.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.3% were non-families. 16.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.44 and the average family size was 3.86.

In the area the population was spread out with 33.1% under the age of 18, 11.4% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 17.6% from 45 to 64, and 7.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females there were 107.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 106.4 males.

The median income for a household in the area was $32,437, and the median income for a family was $35,518. Males had a median income of $28,779 versus $19,936 for females. The Per Capita Income is $11,701. 18.6% of the population and 17.0% of families were below the Poverty Line . 24.3% of those under the age of 18 and 19.3% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.


EDUCATION

Aldine Independent School District and Aldine High School serve the area.

Despite being located in Houston, it is ''not'' served by the Houston Independent School District .

The Harris County Public Library Aldine Branch serves the community.
