There are three types of alabastrons. The first is a basic Corinthian bulbous shape that is usually about 3 to 4 inches tall. They appeared in the 7th Century BC and were popular in Greece. The second type is a long and pointed version that is commonly seen in eastern Greek, Etruscan, and Italo-Corinthian pottery. The third is an Attic type that is about 4 to 8 inches long and has a rounded base. The Attic type also has the ear-shaped projections called lugs. Alabastrons are also seen in Egypt around 1000 BC as well as Assyria in 600 BC and Syria in the 2nd Century BC . |
