He was born in
Minsk
in
Russia
(now
Belarus
). His parents moved to
Seattle, Washington
in the
United States
when he was 6. After graduating from high school in Seattle, he started his own
Band
, playing the
Drum
, and moved to
New York City
in
1928
to pursue a music career. Though he continued playing the drum in night club bands, he began writing songs, collaborating with such other songwriters as

Milton Drake

Walter Kent

Sammy Lerner

Jerry Livingston

Dick Manning

he moved to

to work on stage productions there. He returned to the U.S. three years later.
