''Advise and Consent'' is a Political Novel written by Allen Drury and Published in 1959 .

The book explores the reactions of those in and around the United States Senate to the controversial nomination of a former Communist Party member Robert Leffingwell to be United States Secretary Of State .

The title comes from the United States Constitution 's Article II, Sec. 2, cl. 2, which provides that the President Of The United States "shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors , other public Ministers and Consults, Judges of the Supreme Court , and all other Officers of the United States...."

''Advise and Consent'' won the Pulitzer Prize For Fiction in 1960 . The theme is loosely based on the Alger Hiss and David Lilienthal controversies.

Drury wrote six Sequels , none of which achieved the success of ''Advise and Consent''.


MOTION PICTURE

''Advise and Consent'' is a 1962 Columbia Motion Picture starring Franchot Tone , Lew Ayres , Henry Fonda , Walter Pidgeon , Charles Laughton , Paul Ford , Don Murray , Peter Lawford , Gene Tierney , and Burgess Meredith .

It was adapted for the screen by Wendell Mayes , based on the Allen Drury novel, and was directed by Otto Preminger .

It marked the first time a post- WWII American audience saw a Gay Bar in a movie.
