Adrian College athletic teams, nicknamed the ''Bulldogs'', are part of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA), and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) - Division III. Greek life is present on campus, including Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, Theta Chi Fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, and Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity. There are also three sororities, Alpha Phi, Alpha Sigma Alpha, and Chi Omega. The college had its origin as a theological institute founded by Wesleyan Methodists at Leoni, Michigan in 1845 . This institution merged with Leoni Seminary, another Methodist school, in 1855 to form Michigan Union College. In 1859 , that institution closed and assets were transferred to Adrian to establish Adrian College. The college was chartered by the Michigan Legislature on March 28 , 1859 . On June 30 , 2005 ; president Stanley P. Caine retired after 16 years of leading and shaping the path of students at Adrian College . The next day, Jeffrey Docking became Adrian College's 17th president, after serving as a Vice President at Washington And Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania . Since arriving at Adrian , Docking has introduced many plans to revitalize Adrian College and it's campus. A new performance stadium is set to open in September 2006 , along with a new contract with Sodhexo USA for it's Ritchie Dining Facility on campus. Changes in the residence halls have occurred as well, seeing the college purchase nearby apartments and offer them as a housing alternative for students. Plans are underway to renovate Pellowe Hall, a currently unoccupied residence hall; and create an all-single dormitory each room being en suite, with it's own shower and toilet. There are two phases to Docking's plans, one is entitled "Renaissance I" and another is entitled "Renaissance II." Docking's plan for the revitalization of Adrian College as an academic community will be unveiled during his inagural ceremonies on Saturday , April 1 , 2006 which will be attended by students, faculty, staff, alumni, the greater Adrian community, and representatives from 50 Colleges and Universities across the nation.
