According to the U.S. Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 880 Km&2 (340 Mi&2 ). 879 km&2 (339 mi&2) of it is land and 1 km&2 (1 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 0.17% water.

HISTORY

Adams County was formed in 1836. Its name is in honor of the sixth President Of The United States , John Quincy Adams .


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 33,625 people, 11,818 households, and 8,662 families residing in the county. The Population Density was 38/km&2 (99/mi&2). There were 12,404 housing units at an average density of 14/km&2 (37/mi&2). The racial makeup of the county was 97.31% White , 0.14% Black or African American , 0.17% Native American , 0.20% Asian , 0.03% Pacific Islander , 1.47% from Other Races , and 0.68% from two or more races. 3.32% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 11,818 households out of which 37.50% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.70% were Married Couples living together, 8.30% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.70% were non-families. 24.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.60% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.37.

In the county the population was spread out with 31.10% under the age of 18, 9.10% from 18 to 24, 26.30% from 25 to 44, 20.10% from 45 to 64, and 13.40% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 97.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $40,625, and the median income for a family was $46,749. Males had a median income of $32,332 versus $23,119 for females.
