Acting President Of The Quorum Of The Twelve

Rudger Clawson served as Acting President of the Twelve because the most senior member of the quorum, Anthon Henrik Lund , was serving in the First Presidency . He was sustained as President Of The Quorum Of The Twelve March 17 , 1921 .

Spencer W. Kimball served as Acting President of the Quorum while Harold B. Lee was serving in the First Presidency . He was set apart as President Of The Quorum Of The Twelve when President Harold B. Lee became prophet on July 7 , 1972 .

Because of the ill health of President Marion G. Romney , President Of The Quorum Of The Twelve , Howard W. Hunter was set apart as Acting President of the Quorum. After President Romney died on May 20 , 1988 , President Hunter became President of the Quorum of the Twelve.

Because both President Gordon B. Hinckley and President Thomas S. Monson were and are serving in the First Presidency together from 1985 onward, after the June 5 , 1994 ordination of Howard W. Hunter as the 14th President of the Church, Elder Boyd K. Packer was set apart as Acting President of the Quorum on the day of President Hunter's ordination. He has held that position ever since, although President Hunter's death on March 3 , 1995 led to President Packer being set apart a second time nine months later. The death of either President Hinckley or President Monson would leave President Packer as the second in seniority and therefore President of the Quorum.
