'' (
1978 ) was
Steve Martin 's second album and greatest success on record. It made it to number two on a
Billboard album chart traditionally dominated by music. A comedy album has not reached that level since, and only one other album,
Dane Cook 's ''
Retaliation '' album in
2005 , has made the top ten.
It contains the hit novelty single "King Tut", which Martin also performed on ''
Saturday Night Live ''.
The album was released just as his celebrity status grew ten-fold and the format reflects this. The first half of the album was performed in front of a smaller audience at The Boardinghouse in
San Francisco, California , where his previous album had been recorded. Midway through the album, the track "A Wild and Crazy Guy" starts at the club, with Steve discussing getting profits from his performing:
:"I figured out potential concert income. If you fill a 3,000 seat hall at $3.00-per-ticket, the gross is $9,000. If you fill a 3,000 seat hall at $7.50-per-ticket, the gross is $22,500. And, just for fun, I figured out if you fill a 3,000 seat hall at $800-a-ticket, the gross is $2,400,000. This is what I'm shootin' for. One show. Goodbye."
It then fades into a concert at the
Red Rocks Amphitheatre (with almost ten thousand seats) that he was able to perform in only months after performing in small nightclubs.
This album won the
Grammy Award in
1979 for
Best Comedy Album .
