The ''ASHRAE Handbook'' is a four-volume resource for HVAC&R technology. One of the four volumes is updated each year.

ASHRAE also publishes a well recognized series of Standards and guidlines relating to HVAC Systems. ASHRAE Standards are often referenced in Building Codes . Examples include:

  • Standard 62.1 – Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality (versions: 2001 as "62", 2004 as "62.1")

  • Standard 90.1 - Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings (versions: 2001, 2004)

  • Standard 34 – Designation and Safety Classification of Refrigerant s (versions: 2001, 2004)

  • Standard 55 – Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy (versions: 1992, 2004) (also known unofficially as the ''Adaptive Comfort Standard'')


The ''ASHRAE Journal'' is a monthly magazine published by the ASHRAE. It includes articles on the practical application of HVAC&R technology, information on upcoming meetings and Shows , classified advertising, and editorials. Members of the ASHRAE receive the magazine free of charge.

ASHRAE was formed in 1959 by the merging of two societies: the American Society of Heating and Air-Conditioning Engineers and the American Society of Refrigerating Engineers.
