''ABC News'' is the name the of Australian Broadcasting Corporation 's news service. Its flagship bulletin is broadcast at 7:00pm every night, with a separate bulletin for each state and territory. This is in contrast to the commercial networks whose news services focus heavily on the metropolitan cities. The main bulletins are thus:

New South Wales

Victoria

Queensland

South Australia

Western Australia

Tasmania

Australian Capital Territory

Northern Territory

ABC-TV updates

In early 2006, the ABC began increasing the number of ''ABC News'' updates it produced. The current scheme of 8.30pm and 9.30pm updates was introduced in 1985 with ''The National'', which aired at 6.30pm and finished at 7.30pm. It was thought sensible to produce updates during the programme breaks at hourly intervals. ''ABC-TV News'' updates are typically just over a minute in length, although 5 minute updates are produced on weekends.

Weekday updates:

  • Mornings: 10am and 11am

  • Afternoons: 2pm

  • Evenings: 6pm, 6.30pm, 8.30pm and 9.30pm

The morning and afternoon updates are produced nationally. The 2pm update is presented by Emma Renwick . The 6pm, 6.30pm and 8.30pm updates are produced locally and presented by state-based anchors, although the 8.30pm update ends with a weather update delivered by the state-based weather presenter. All ''ABC News'' updates include weather updates, although the 8.30pm one is the only one with a dedicated presenter for it. The 9.30pm update is produced nationally from the Sydney studios of ''ABC News'' and is presented by the ''ABC News New South Wales'' anchor.

Until the late 1990s, there was also a 10-minute ''ABC Late Edition News'' programme produced nationally that aired just before ''Lateline''. Due to the costs of producing this bulletin, it was removed and ''Lateline'' now begins with a news update and ends with the business, finance and weather segments formerly part of the ''Late Edition News'' bulletin. ''ABC Late Edition News'' is aired during the summer when ''Lateline'' is in recess.

Weekend updates:

  • Afternoons: 12noon

  • Evenings: 6pm, 8.30pm and 9.30pm (not on Sundays)

The midday update is produced in lieu of ''The Midday Report'' and is usually presented by a Sydney-based reporter. The 6pm update, once again, is produced locally and presented by the state-based weekend anchor. The 8.30pm update is produced nationally and, on Sunday, is five minutes in duration. The 9.30pm update on Saturday night is five minutes in duration. The reason for the lack of a 9.30pm update on Sunday night is the 'traditional' ABC drama aired after the 8.30pm update that is typically longer than an hour long.

ABC2 and ABC Online

ABC2 runs specially-produced ''ABC News'' updates throughout the day. The ABC2 News and Current Affairs presenters also present ABC Online news programmes. These programmes are produced in Brisbane. The presenters are:

Specialist Reporters and Editors

ABC CURRENT AFFAIRS

The ABC produces many current affairs programmes, including The 7.30 Report and Lateline .

CORRESPONDENTS

Television News

Radio and Television

  • Middle East: Matt Brown (not to be confused with ''ABC News''' Victorian sports reporter of the same name), Peter George

Special ABC Correspondents

There are a few ABC Correspondents who usually report or present ABC programmes in Australia but are sent overseas to cover special events. Such ABC Correspondents usually have an area of speciality and have reported in a certain area before. Peter Cave is the ABC's senior foreign affairs correspondent and often reports on issues in South-East Asia when sent overseas.

During the Solomons Islands crisis of April 2006, Phillip Williams , the presenter of ''Stateline'' in the Australian Capital Territory, was sent across to report on events there. As a result, Sean Dorney, the ABC's designated Pacific Correspondent, moved across to ABC Radio News and Current Affairs to cover the Solomons Crisis for them.
