Information About

Aaa Northern Region

The Northern Region is comprised of most of the public schools in Northern Virginia , including all the public high schools in Fairfax County , Arlington County , and Alexandria, Virginia . Most of the high schools in Prince William County , and Manassas City are also in Group AAA, but are in the AAA Northwestern Region due to the high amount of AAA schools already in the Northern Region. Loudoun County high schools are typically smaller in size compared with those in the Northern Region and play in Group AA, though Loudoun Valley High School of Purcellville and Stone Bridge High School of Ashburn are both currently AAA in size and are in the Northern Region. Falls Church City and Manassas Park City are both independent cities in Northern Virginia that have high schools that play in Group A, VHSL's smallest classification.

REALIGNMENT OF SCHOOLS WITHIN THE NORTHERN REGION

The Northern Region realigned its districts in 2005 to equalize opportunities, in particular for football, for both the Division 6 (larger AAA schools) and the Division 5 (smaller AAA schools) members. The AAA Liberty and National Districts were aligned to hold the Division 5 schools and the Concorde and Patriot Districts to hold the Division 6 schools. The plan has worked for the most part, but South County and Hayfield are both Division 5 and in the Patriot District. Langley and Woodson are Division 6 and in the Liberty District. This exception occurred because South County opened in 2005, throwing the division and district alignment off somewhat. Another reason why the realignment did not work completely was because of Stone Bridge's and Loudoun Valley's arrivals to the region. The Northern Region originally tried to keep both schools away from the region, but the VHSL turned the proposals.

The school and district realignment within Northern Region schools has not changed the membership of most districts considerably, but some school rivalries have been thrown off by it, including Fairfax and Woodson, and Lake Braddock and Robinson.

POSSIBLE REGION CHANGES IN 2007-2008

The Virginia High School League met in February to discuss district realignment amongst its members. The VHSL initially did not make any changes to the Northern Region, but moved Loudoun Valley to the Northwestern Region and the AAA Cedar Run District, however, the Northwestern Region was overwhelmingly against Valley's entry in the Cedar Run.

It is also expected that Hayfield will be moved to the National District because of its lower enrollment. Woodson of the Liberty District is also likely to move to the Concorde or Patriot District because they were classified as Division 6 in the 2005-2006 year. Langley, another current Liberty member may also be moved into the Concorde or Patriot Districts because they are currently a Division 6 school, but are "on the bubble." If all of these moves occur, then it is possible that Loudoun Valley could remain in the Northern Region, but will probably be moved into the Concorde because their school is experiencing high growth and their enrollment is expected to be around 2,100 students next year.

An additional high school in Loudoun County in the Dulles area is scheduled to open between 2008 and 2010, which is likely to drop Stone Bridge's enrollment. If this happens, Stone Bridge is likely to return to the AA Dulles District in the near future.

The final VHSL districts will be determined in September 2006.
