The Liberty District schools compete in the AAA Northern Region with the schools from the AAA Concorde District , the AAA National District , and the AAA Patriot District . FACTS ABOUT THE DISTRICT All Liberty District schools except for Stone Bridge are located in Fairfax County, Virginia and in the Fairfax County Public School Division . Stone Bridge is in Loudoun County, Virginia and in the Loudoun County Public School Division . Currently the district's geography stretches as east as McLean , as south as Alexandria , and as north and west as Ashburn . The smallest member is Marshall High School with roughly 1,400 students. The largest member is Wilbert Tucker Woodson High School with about 2,100 students. Marshall and South Lakes are both considered to be AA in size by the VHSL , but have elected to play up in the Liberty instead, due to their reluctance to regularly play against schools in the AA Dulles District which are also farther away. The Liberty District contains most of the smaller AAA schools located in the western part of the Northern Region and six of its eight members play Division 5 football. Langley and Woodson play Division 6 football, but are the two smallest Division 6 schools in the Northern Region, and were bumped up to Division 6 when Hayfield of the Patriot District fed a considerable amount of its student body into South County . NEW MEMBERS IN 2005 The Liberty District welcomed two new members for the 2005-2006 and the 2006-2007 cycle. The first was Thomas Jefferson High School For Science And Technology , which previously played in the AAA National and AAA Concorde Districts. The second new member is Stone Bridge High School of Ashburn, Virginia which previously played in the AA Dulles District . Jefferson moved to the Liberty without much difficulty, because the school was in the vincinity of most of the other member schools. Though Jefferson is in Alexandria, and closer to schools in the National District which is also made of Division 5 schools, the majority of the student body at Jefferson lives around McLean, Vienna, and Fairfax, where most of the Liberty District member schools are located. Jefferson is a magnet school which is science and technology oriented and also considered one of the top public high schools in the United States. Stone Bridge originally petitioned to stay at the Dulles District because of transportation reasons (South Lakes is the closest being about 15 miles away to the east, and Jefferson the farthest being over 30 miles away). The Liberty District and the Dulles District supported Stone Bridge's petition to stay in AA, however it was unsuccessful because of two reasons. First, Stone Bridge at the time believed that the opening of Briar Woods High School would lower their enrollment under the AA/AAA cutoff, and later projections said that Stone Bridge would still be AAA size. Second, Region II, the AA region where the Dulles District is in did not support Stone Bridge's petition, because its larger enrollment put them at an unfair advantage over smaller schools that are determined to be AA in size. Interestingly enough, Stone Bridge won its first two state titles (both in AA) for cheerleading and girls soccer during the 2004-2005 school year, when the school was at 1,900 students, which is usually the size of a AAA Division 6 school. Virginia AA schools are typically between 700 to 1,500 students. The Liberty District lost two schools as a result of Jefferson's and Stone Bridge's arrivals and due to the Northern Region's realignment. Fairfax High School moved to the Concorde District because it was perenially a Division 6 school, and Robert E. Lee High School of Springfield moved to the Patriot District for similar reasons. Both Fairfax and Lee were perennial members of the Liberty District until 2005. HIGHLIGHTS The Liberty District is typically considered one of the weaker AAA districts in football. However, with Stone Bridge's arrival in 2005, the Bulldogs won the Division 5 Northern Region title and made the final game against Hampton High School in their first year of AAA play. Stone Bridge also won the AAA state cheerleading title in 2005, after winning the AA title the year before. Boys and Girls basketball does have a strong standing within the district, with South Lakes High School typically having the strongest boys prgoram, and James Madison High School for the girls.
