In the United States Air Force , the 5th Bomb Wing ('''5BW''') is a B-52 Stratofortress unit based at Minot Air Force Base , North Dakota . It is the host unit at the base. Its current commander is Colonel Eldon Woodie. The wing, one of only two B-52 wings in the US Air Force (the other being the 2d Bomb Wing at Barksdale Air Force Base ), is a part of the Eighth Air Force , which in turn is under Air Combat Command .

LINEAGE

Established in the independent US Air Force as 5th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing on 1 July 1949 . Activated on 16 July 1949. Redesignated 5th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, Heavy on 14 November 1950 ; 5th Bombardment Wing, Heavy on 1 Oct 1955; 5th Wing on 1 September 1991 ; 5th Bomb Wing on 1 June 1992 .
