Early on the morning of Saturday 22 August 1914, C Squadron commanded by Major Tom Bridges, sent out two patrols going north from Mons towards Soignies, and came into contact with German forces for the first time.

C Squadron heading out from Maisières came upon four enemy cavalrymen of the 2nd Kuirassiers from the direction of Casteau. They were spotted by the British and turned around to make a hasty retreat chased by the 1st Troop under Captain Hornby and the 4th Troop.

The first soldier to open fire on the Germans was was also the first fired by a British soldier in the Great War.

Hornby led his men in pursuit of the Germans, killing several. He returned with his sword presented, revealing German blood.
