C Squadron heading out from Maisières came upon four enemy cavalrymen of the 2nd Kuirassiers from the direction of Casteau. They were spotted by the British and turned around to make a hasty retreat chased by the 1st Troop under Captain Hornby and the 4th Troop. The first soldier to open fire on the Germans was was also the first fired by a British soldier in the Great War. Hornby led his men in pursuit of the Germans, killing several.
