The 460 is one of the world's most powerful rifle cartridges, in terms of both velocity and bullet weight. It will launch a 500 grain (33 g) bullet at a chronographed 2600 feet per second (792 m/s) from a 26" (66 cm) barreled rifle, which requires extreme durability from the bullet itself. Recoil is a problem for many shooters when using a cartridge this powerful. The recoil of the full-power loads is very punishing, and if the gun has a scope, scope cuts on the forehead are common. For that reason, many gun owners reload their cartridges with lighter-than-factory charges, and some even use Black Powder . Guns might also be equipped with only Open Sights to eliminate scope cuts. There are some very good but rather ignored open sight systems that allow accurate shooting up to about 200 yards or so, more for experienced shooters. Even with a 12 pound (5.4 kg) rifle (scope, rings, cartridges included) the recoil against the shooter's shoulder is measured at 100 Foot Pound s (135 Nm ). This cartridge is very accurate and with a proper full metal jacketed bullet will penetrate more than thirty inches of seasoned oak. It has few peers as a stopper on dangerous African game. Factory-bought cartridges are relatively expensive costing between $ 4.00 and $5.50 per cartridge. EXTERNAL LINKS
