The 2006 African Cup of Nations was the 25th edition of the African Cup Of Nations , the Football championship of Africa ( CAF ). It was hosted, and won, by Egypt and lasted until February 10 , 2006 . QUALIFIERS The African section of the 2006 World Cup Qualifying Groups were also used as qualifiers for the 2006 African Cup of Nations. Although only the top team of each group qualified for the World Cup , the top ''three'' teams in each of the five groups made their way to the African Cup of Nations. Host Egypt qualified automatically, and as they finished in the top three of their group, the fourth placed finisher of that group, Libya , got the 16th spot. With the qualifying for the 2006 FIFA World Cup throwing up surprise group winners in Angola , Ivory Coast , Ghana and Togo , this tournament was a good chance to pit them against established powers such as Cameroon , Egypt , Morocco , Nigeria and Senegal . Of the four surprise World Cup qualifiers, only Côte d'Ivoire qualified for the knockout phase in this tournament, finishing second in their group, and ultimately were runners-up in the whole competition. High-profile non-qualifiers include Algeria , Liberia and Mali .
