This was the first competition in the series to employ a "bonus point" system for classifying teams. In prior competitions, teams earned 2 points for a win and 1 for a draw. Starting with the 2003-04 competition, teams earned points in the pool matches under the following schedule:

  • 4 points for a win

  • 2 points for a draw

  • 1 bonus point for scoring 4 or more tries, regardless of the final score

  • 1 bonus point for losing by 7 or fewer points


This means a match winner will earn either 4 or 5 points. A match loser can earn 0, 1, or 2 points.
