The 2001-02 Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclone season ran from July 1 , 2001 through June 30 , 2002 . These dates generally delimit the period of time when Tropical Cyclone s form in the Southern Hemisphere . AUSTRALIA CYCLONE BERNIE Bernie formed in early January , 2002 in the Gulf of Carpentaria and made landfall near the Queensland/Northern Territory border as a Category 2 cyclone. Damage was reported due to flooding. Bernie and Chris are the only cyclones to affect Australia in this season. Cyclone Chris A tropical low developed into Tropical Cyclone Chris on February 3 , 2002 . Chris rapidly intensified into a Category 5 cyclone and maintained intensity, but it made landfall in a sparsely populated area of Western Australia . With an exception of flooding, damage was minor. Tropical Storm Bonnie Bonnie formed on April 9 , 2002 east of Timor . The storm moved westward over the islands where it reached reached its peak of 50mph (45kts) before dissapating on April 14 .
