Villeneuve, M Schumacher and Frentzen each set the same time in qualifying. Starting order was decided by who recorded the time first.
Michael Schumacher tried to take out Villeneuve to ensure his championship,but however the move backfired and Villeneuve,although having his car badly battered was able to continue and Schumacher retired. Michael Schumacher was disqualified from the championship as a result of this.
