The 1997-98 Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclone season ran year-round from July 1 , 1997 to June 30 , 1998 , reaching its peak mid-February to early March. AUSTRALIA Cyclone Sid A . Sid report Cyclone Sewlyn Sewlyn formed on December 26 , 1997 . The storm breifely reached Category 1 cyclone strength before encountering Wind Shear and weakening. There were no reports of damage or deaths from Sewlyn. Sewlyn Cyclone Les Les formed on January 23 , 1998 near Darwin , Australia . The storm moved westward reaching Category 1 status before making landfall on the eastern gulf coast of the Northern Territory . Moving back out over the Timor Sea , Les hugged the coast and regained strength before making a second landfall and dissapating. Les caused extensive flooding and damage in the town of Katherine and there was one death. Les Report Cyclone Tiffany Tiffany was a small intense cyclone that formed on January 24 , 1998 . The cyclone moved out to sea and dissapated on February 2 . Tiffany report Tropical Storm May May formed from an area of low pressure on February 25 , 1998 near the Australian coast. May moved southward before making landfall near Mornington Island on February 26 . After that the storm dissapated while moving inland. May report There were no reports of deaths or damage from Tropical Storm May. Tropical Depression 35S A low formed off the coast of Australia on April 16 , 1998 . The depression moved southwestward before making landfall in Western Australia on the 19th. 35S report There were reports of heavy rain but no report of damage or deaths from the unnamed storm. SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN Tropical Storm Lusi Lusi formed on October 8 , 1997 750 miles northwest of Fiji . Lusi reached a peak of 60mph (50 kts) before encountering wind shear and disspating on the 12th. The caused no damage when it by passed Fiji . Lusi report Cyclone Martin A , Martin passed south of the atoll where it briefly reached Category 1 status before accelarating towards New Zealand . Martin dissapated on November 5 . Martin caused moderate damage on Manihiki Atoll . {Link without Title} Cyclone Nute Nute formed from an area of low pressure on November 18 , 1997 . The storm briefly reached Category 1 cyclone status with winds at 80 mph before being torn apart by Wind Shear . Nute report Cyclone Osea Osea formed on November 22 , 1997 near the Manihiki Atoll . After drifting slowily to the southeast, Osea began to pick up speed. By November 25 , the storm reached Category 1 cyclone status as it passed south of Tahiti as a Tropical Depression . Osea later dissapated on November 28 . Osea report About 700 homes in the French Polynesia were destroyed by the storm but there were no deaths. Osea report Tropical Storm Pam A Tropical Depression formed near American Samoa on December 5 , 1997 . Later the system strengthened into Tropical Storm Pam on the 6th. Pam reached a peak of 70 mph before brushing past Rarotonga on December 9 as a weakening Tropical Storm . Pam report Pam caused little damage on the island. Cyclone Susan Susan formed on December 20 , 1997 near Samoa . The storm meandered a little before reaching Category 1 strength on January 3 , 1998 . After that Cyclone Susan moved westward and then southwestward until it was 225 miles of Vila, Vanuatu . Susan then reached to Category 4 status and held it for 36 hours as the storm swung south-southwestward of Nari . After bypassing Fiji , Cyclone Susan accelerated and then merged with Cyclone Ron (which is a rarity in Tropical Cyclones) and then became extratropical near New Zealand . Susan report Susan left minor damage in the Fiji Islands and there was only one death. Susan report Cyclone Katrina Cyclone Katrina was the longest-lived South Pacific cyclone on record, lasting 24 days while moving erratically east of Australia. Katrina formed on strength once more before slowing down and being affected by Wind Shear . By January 24 , Katrina had weakened to a tropical depression and on January 25 , Katrina dissapated 250 miles east of Townsville . Katrina report Cyclone Zuman Cyclone Zuman formed on , the storm brushd past New Caledonia before becoming extratropical. Zuman caused heavy damage in Espiritu Santo as there were serious damage to dwellings and cocanut trees. But there were no deaths resulting from the storm. Tropical Storm Alan A Tropical Wave was detected on April 17 , 1998 near the Cooks Islands , the disturbance then strengthened into a Tropical Depression south east of Manihiki Atoll on the 19th. The depression remained stationary for several days strengthening into Tropical Storm Alan on April 21 before being downgraded back to Tropical Depression status. 24 hours later, the downgraded remnants of Alan became better organized and warnings were resumed as the storm passed close to the Society Islands and Bora Bora on the 24th. Alan then weakened back to a Tropical Depression and dissapated south of Tahiti on April 26 . Alan report Alan caused 8 deaths in the Society Islands , most of it from flooding and mudslides. Tropical Storm Bart Bart formed on April 28 , 1998 350 miles east-northeast of Tahiti and moved southward where it winds peaked at 50 mph on April 30 before encoutering Wind Shear and dissapaiting on May 3 . About ten fatalites were attribrted to Bart although the exact location of where the deaths occurred is unknown. Bart report SOUTH INDIAN OCEAN Cyclone Gemma A Tropical Depression formed on April 7 , 1998 and later strengthened into Tropical Storm Gemma on April 9 . Gemma moved westward reaching a peak of 80 mph (70 knots) before weakening on April 11 . After that, Wind Shear weakened Gemma further to a 50 mph Tropical Storm . On April 14 , the shear caused the main circulation to separate from the rest of the storm and on the 15, Gemma dissapated near Diego Garcia . Geema report Tropical Depression 33S TD-33S formed on April 7 south of Diego Garcia near TD-32S which later became Tropical Storm Gemma. TD-335 moved southeastward before being merged by TD-32S after reaching a peak of 35 mph. 33S report Tropical Storm 34S 34S formed on April 19 , 1998 , 220 miles southeast of Deigo Garcia as a 45 mph Tropical Storm . The storm was expected to strengthen into a Tropical Cyclone until it encountered Wind Shear and disspated on the 22nd. 34S report SEE ALSO EXTERNAL LINKS NOTES |
