In the 1992-1993 NBA season, the Chicago Bulls did what no team had done since the legendary Boston Celtics of the 1960s by chalking up the three-peat over regular season MVP Charles Barkley and the Phoenix Suns (who won 62 games in 1992-1993), with John Paxson 's historic shot heard around the world that gave them a 99-98 victory in Game 6 at Phoenix. It was one of the greatest and most thrilling NBA Finals to be ever played. The home team struggled to win in this series and many of the games were tight. GAMES 1-3 The Bulls had 120-112 and 111-108 wins in Games 1 and 2 and headed home up 2-0. But the Suns responded with a dramatic 129-121 triple overtime victory in Game 3. GAME 4 In Game 4, Michael Jordan was unstoppable by scoring 55 points at Chicago Stadium and made a tough driving layup late in the game while getting fouled as the Bulls won 111-106. GAME 5 The Suns never trailed in a 105-94 Game 5 win on the road to head home for Game 6 down 3-2. GAME 6 The Bulls got off to a good start in Game 6 but struggled in the fourth quarter after wasting a double digit lead and trailed 98-94. Michael Jordan made a layup to cut the margin to 2 points and the Suns missed a shot on their next possession. with the Bulls down 98 to 96 and facing a seventh game if they lost that day, John Paxson took a pass from Horace Grant and buried a three pointer with three seconds left, giving the Bulls a 99-98 lead which they held to secure (with the aide of a last-second block by Horace Grant ) their third consecutive world title. That particular shot became known as the NBA's version of ''the shot heard around the world''. Michael Jordan was once again the Finals MVP after setting a Finals record for points per game. Jordan, who averaged a Finals-record 41 PPG during the six game series, became the first person in NBA history to win 3 straight Finals MVPs. He also tied Wilt Chamberlain by winning his seventh straight scoring title. Prior to the Finals, Charles Barkley told Michael Jordan that it was Destiny for the Suns to win the Championship . However, Barkley would never return to the Finals. In addition, just like in the 1976 NBA Finals (also involving the Suns), this series, too, included a triple-overtime game (Game 3); the Suns have been involved in both of these longest-ever NBA Finals games.
