This was Oakland's fourth trip to the ALCS in five years, while this was Toronto's 4th in 8 years, and second in a row. The first two games were played at Toronto 's SkyDome (now Rogers Centre ). Oakland won Game 1, Toronto won Game 2. Both games were low-scoring. Games 3 through 5 were at the Oakland Coliseum , with Games 3 and 4 being quite high-scoring and close. The defining moment of the Series came in the ninth inning of Game 4, when Toronto second baseman Roberto Alomar hit a game-tying 2-run home run off Athletics Closer Dennis Eckersley . The Blue Jays would eventually win the game 7-6 in 11 innings and take a 3-1 series lead. However, Oakland won Game 5 by a score of 6-2 to take the series back to Toronto. Game 6 was highlighted by a third-inning home run by Candy Maldonado , and the Blue Jays would win 9-2, winning the series 4 games to 2. This marked the first time a non-American based team would be going to the World Series . |
