GROUP STAGE The four groups in the initial round were: Group A , , Group B , , Group C , , Group D , , This was an all west African Affair in the Semi Finals. Cameroon and Zaire qualified in Grp A, Nigeria and Senegal in Grp B, Côte d'Ivoire and Congo Brazaville in Grp C and Ghana and Zambia in Grp D. In the quarter Finals,Cameroon beat Senegal the Host 1:0, Nigeria beat Zaire 2:0 ( Yekini scored two), Ivory Coast beat Zambia 1:0 and Ghana beat Congo Brazaville 2:1 (Abedi Pele and Anthony Yeboah on target for Ghana) In the Semi Finals, Cameroon lost to Côte d'Ivoire on penalties(3:1) after a 0:0. Ghana came from a goal behind to beat Nigeria 2:1.(Adepoju, Abedi Pele and Prince Opoku) Abedi Pele was suspended for the final. Took a second yellow after showing decent on the Tunisian refree amidst his frustration when he was warned about his tackle on Nigerian star Ajibade Babalade. This made the Ghanaian Captain and livewire ineligible for the final since he had already taken a yellow in the match against Congo( quarterfinals). Côte d'Ivoire powered by Sergi Maggi, Guel, Tiehi, Otokori, Abdoulaye Traore, Moussa Traore, and inspirational keeper Alain Gouamene who didn't concede a goal in the entire tournament won the game in a scintillating shootout. Tiehi Joel miseed for Côte d'Ivoire while Asare Isaac missed for Ghana.After ever player in each team had participated in the shootout, Tony Baffoe missed his second penalty kick for Ghana to make the score 10:11 for Côte d'Ivoire. Cup was presented by Senegalese president Abu Diouf. Abedi Pele was adjudged player of the tournament, Yekini Rashidi as goal king and Nigeria beat Cameroon to win the bronze medal. EXTERNAL LINKS |
