Villanova , coached by Rollie Massimino , won the national title with a 66-64 victory in the final game over Georgetown , coached by John Thompson . Ed Pinckney of Villanova was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player .

This year's Final Four saw an unprecedented three teams from the same conference, with Big East members Villanova and Georgetown joined by St. John's . The only "interloper" in the Big East party was Memphis State .

In March 2006, ESPN Classic , as part of their on-going series '' The Top 5 Reasons You Can't Blame... '' tried to exonerate Georgetown for losing to Villanova in the 1985 NCAA Final.
  • ''The Best of the Rest:'' The Crowd - The Arena got behind the Villanova Wildcats; Al Severance - The former Villanova coach died the morning of the game.

  • ''5. The Cinderella Tournament'' - When one loss sends you home, anything can happen and no team, no matter how good, can win every single game it plays.

  • ''4. No Fear'' - Villanova had played Georgetown nine times in four years. The familiarity made Villanova unafraid of the favorites. Plus, though Villanova lost both regular season games it played against Georgetown in 1984-85, they both went into overtime.

  • ''3. Harold Jensen '' - The Villanova sophomore reserve guard got hot at the right time and made many important shots that kept Villanova in the tournament.

  • ''2. Daddy Mass'' - Villanova coach Rollie Massimino , a passionate motivator, pushed all the right buttons. He treated the team like family, but was still tough and expected his players to perform.

  • ''1. April Fool's Day '' - The joke was on Georgetown, as Villanova played a perfect game, shooting 79.2 percent from the field for the game, including 9 for 10 in the second half.
