A clash of hockey titans occurred in December 1975 through the earliest weeks of 1976. The Red Army Club and Krilya Sovetov (Soviet Wings) were to face the strongest clubs of the NHL. The Red Army defeated the New York Rangers, then the Soviet Wings dumped the Pittsburgh Penguins. On New Year's Eve 1975, a much-heralded game between the Red Army and Montreal Canadiens resulted in a 3-3 tie in a monumental contest that is widely regarded as one of the greatest games ever to have taken place. The series continued with Buffalo doubling the Soviet Wings, and the Wings coming back to double the Blackhawks. The Red Army dumped Boston, and the Soviet Wings edged the Islanders. The only blemish on the Red Army's record is a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the defending Stanley Cup champion Philadelphia Flyers. Red Army final tally: 2 wins, 1 loss, 1 tie. Soviet Wings final tally: 3 wins, 1 loss. |
