EVENTS

  • For the first time since 1967 , Sonny James fails to hit the No. 1 spot on '' Billboard Magazine 's'' Hot Country Singles Chart with a single release. His hit, "Only Love (Can Break a Heart)" stops at No. 2. James' record streak would hold for more than 14 years, until Alabama scored its 17th-straight with "40 Hour Week (For a Livin')" in August 1985 .

  • : "The Southern Gentleman" would return to No. 1 in June with "That's Why I Love You Like I Do" (a retitled remake of his 1957 hit, "You're the Reason I'm In Love," which by the way was the lesser-known flip side of "Young Love"). "That's Why I Love You ..." (complete with a horn chorus) was James' last major hit for Capitol Records . During 1972, he inked a deal with Columbia Records, where he would continue to chart top 10 hits through 1977; included were two No. 1 hits, one of which was 1972's "When the Snow is on the Roses."

  • They would be years away from their peak in popularity, but the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band would forever etch their name in country music history with the release of ''Will the Circle Be Unbroken?'' The album of folk and country standards was recorded in Nashville alongside traditional country artists. Two more volumes, which continue the California -based band's great tradition and love for country music, would be released in 1989 and 2002 .

  • Loretta Lynn becomes the first woman to win the Country Music Association's Entertainer of the Year award.
