The 1936 season was fairly active, with 16 tropical cyclones forming during the season tied with 2003 Season . Seven of those became hurricanes, of which only one became a major hurricane. The 1936 Atlantic hurricane season held records for the earliest record date of formation of a season's sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, thirteenth, and fourteenth tropical storms that lasted until the 2005 Atlantic Hurricane Season broke all of them. June saw three tropical cyclones, one of which was a hurricane that hit Texas. The first, a tropical storm, caused three deaths when a Coast Guard airplane crashed, and moderate flooding in southern Florida . A tropical storm and a hurricane existed during the month in July. The hurricane caused $123,000 in damage as it crossed over Florida twice late in the month. Of the six tropical storms that formed in August, none of them caused any significant damage or death toll. Three tropical cyclones did hit the same general area of Mexico, where they likely caused flooding. September saw four tropical storms, of which two became hurricanes. A tropical storm and a hurricane remained out at sea. A tropical storm moved up the western Gulf of Mexico and struck Texas on September 13 , causing little damage. The most notable storm, however, was a Category 2 hurricane that traveled up the entire northeast US coast. It caused only two known deaths thanks to advance warnings, but it caused nearly a million dollars in damage (1936 dollars). SEE ALSO EXTERNAL LINKS |
