The competition was competed for between Eastern Province , Western Province , Natal , Griqualand West and Transvaal . All the games were played in March 1897 and the holders, Western Province, ended up as winners.

Transvaal were the hosts of the Currie Cup and automatically qualified for the final. Their challengers were determined by reference to the qualifying round-robin. The team with the most wins, which turned out to be Western Province, were the challengers. Had two teams been level on wins, the result of the match between those two teams would have been the deciding factor.
