Other impressive records during this cold wave included -41 F at St. Paul, MN, -30 F at Spokane, WA, -28 F at Boise, ID, -2 F in downtown Portland, OR, 1 F at Newport, OR, and 20 F at Eureka, CA. All of these readings still stand as all-time record lows for these locations. Also, maximums of -10 F in Spokane and 9 F in Portland were all-time lowest maximums which stand to this day. A significant freeze was also recorded all the way into the citrus growing areas of southern California during this cold wave. This cold wave also sparked an intense arctic front and deadly blizzard that swept the Great Plains, catching many people off guard and freezing hundreds of children to death that had been sent home early to avoid the blizzard. This tragedy became known as the Schoolhouse Blizzard , or Schoolchildrens' Blizzard. |
